Character Name: Somnus Lucis Caelum
Age: 30
Canon: Final Fantasy XV
World Description: Here
History: Here
CRAU: N/A
Death: In an unfortunate twist of events, Somnus declares himself the king of the new kingdom, only to be cut down by Ardyn in the ensuing kerfuffle. Where's Gilgamesh when you need him?
What are your plans for this character in-game? Somnus in the past is very different from Somnus in the future. With his premature death, he hasn't received the gods' prophecy and submitted to his house's fate. He's still very out of touch with his emotions and more than willing to defy authority in the interest of those he's sworn to protect, except he's left his people behind. Some serious self-reflection will be in order before he comes to terms with his failures and finds meaning in the afterlife. Ultimately, I want him to grow into his potential on his own by making something of himself outside of his brother's shadow and the gods' prophecy.
What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? Everything! Somnus is no stranger to death, bleak odds, and darkness. But personal circumstances have changed drastically for him, and it'll be interesting to see how he engages with the people now that he's just an unremarkable face without a purpose in the crowd.
How does your character generally get along with other people? Somnus is obstinate, opinionated, and insecure, making for a nightmarish combination during an argument. On the other hand, he values teamwork and has proven himself to be a gifted leader, so he engages others easily for the sake of getting things done. If necessary, he's capable of charming people by dropping the right words at the right time. Manipulative at his worst and inspiring at his best, he can be a touch gruff but highly reasonable when the other party shares his taste for logic.
What is your character's mental state upon entering the game? With his worst insecurities justified, he arrives bitter. Furious with his brother and the gods, he nevertheless concedes that it was him who was ultimately inadequate, else he wouldn't have perished in such disgrace. In his mind, he's no longer of House Caelum after Ardyn demanded that he renounce his name. Somnus has already tasted despair and persisted, however, so his initial irritability will eventually give way to draw a feisty air about him. In short, he's not doing good, but he'll recognize that there's stuff to be done.
Skills/Abilities: Somnus possesses what becomes known as the power of kings, which includes access to a hammerspace, warping and phasing, and a plethora of spells (elemental, protective, and restorative). Most of these abilities are accompanied by particles of light, which will be dulled accordingly, and the restorative properties with which he can imbue drinks will be weakened. He can only warp as far as he can throw his weapon, so his destination will always be within his line of sight; phasing lasts for a fraction of a second and won't take him past obstructions. Fire spells will no longer burn, and both fire and lightning spells won't cast light.
He's a talented combatant who wields swords and spears, and who engages in fisticuffs when disarmed.
Flaws/Weaknesses: Somnus is cripplingly envious of his brother, whom he loves dearly in spite of their bloody clash. In their youth, Ardyn was Somnus' idol. Ardyn was also ever his superior, no matter how hard Somnus tried. Ardyn was loved by the people, who reviled Somnus. Ardyn was blessed by the gods, who scorned Somnus. Ardyn was chosen, whereas Somnus was not. Somnus is haunted by his brother, whose words disparaged his best efforts: "Is that why you take the easy way out?"
Somnus' greatest strengths are also his worst weaknesses, particularly when they clash. He's realistic and righteous, and these traits sometimes find themselves at odds. He thinks of the big picture and can be ruthless in his pursuit of it insofar as to forgo all morals. Even should he achieve the best outcome, his conscience will suffer greatly in such cases, which then segues into the following.
Where matters of the heart are concerned, he struggles to understand his own emotions. While he recognizes the symptoms, it's only in the far future that Somnus realizes it was his envy that drove him to a dark place. He bottles his feelings up and doesn't confide his hurts to anyone, causing his bitterness to fester.
Physically, Somnus is only human, albeit one who was blessed by the gods. He's still just as susceptible to injury as the next person.
Personality: Justice guides Somnus' actions, leading him to make hard decisions grounded in fairness. He acknowledges that people are comprised of both bad and good parts, and strives to erase bias in his decisions no matter who's involved. Though he's described as severe in nature, he dons the mantle of a harsh leader to benefit those who would follow him.
Somnus gives his everything to his duty. He was brave and endured the backlash for his actions in silence, even when the knowledge that the people most likely held him in contempt hurt. In spite of his hang-ups, he still loved and prioritized the people who feared and vilified him. This dedication to protecting the people's future is what drove him to plot against the gods, which was unthinkable for a time succeeding the collapse of a prosperous civilization that had wronged its god.
Items: Sword x2, broken sword, spear, and his bloodied attire after he got run through by brother dearest
